GIANT SCHNAUZER PUPPIES AND 4th OF JULY FIREWORKS!
5th July, 2011 15:26
Desensitizing giant schnauzer puppies generally involves matching good things with the sounds that frighten the puppies. For example, you might use a videotape of fireworks and offer the giant schnauzer puppies treats while playing the video in the background. Start the video volume low and raise it each day while continuing to play or offer treats to the giant schnauzer puppies, with the final goal of having the Giants hear the fireworks at a higher volume without a fearful reaction. This is a process that will obviously take repeated sessions and days, and while not always successful, can pay off with patience and repetition.
STAY CALM BUT PAY ATTENTION
Try not to react to the fireworks yourself and do not make an extreme change in the way you act around the giant schnauzer puppies when the fireworks explode. Drastic changes in your behavior can reinforce the behavior of the Giants. If you become overly affectionate and coddle the Giant - which is a natural reaction to the anxiety of your puppy - you may reinforce the anxiety and behavior associated with the fireworks. At the same time, don't ignore giant schnauzer puppies either. Try playing with them, petting them or interacting with them during the booms and bangs without becoming overly affectionate, to reinforce the idea that the booms and bangs are just a part of a normal life and a normal routine.
COVER UP THE BOOM AND MAKE EM COMFORTABLE
If desensitizing simply does not rid the giant schnauzer puppies of their fear, turn up the television, close windows, play music or use any other noise that does not create anxiety in the Giant to cover up the explosions. Continue to attempt to associate good things like play time and treats with the sounds of the fireworks as well. If you cannot get the giant schnauzer puppies over their fear, simply make them as comfortable as possible. If there is a bed or other area where the Giants feel safe, make sure that area is available to the puppies. Just like humans, some Giant Schnauzer puppies will simply carry certain fears throughout their life.
Talk to your vet if the anxiety is severe or simply will not subside, as there are other products and medicines available that may help aid in easing severe stress felt by the giant schnauzer puppies.
